LESSON 10

๐Ÿ  There is / There are

Describe your room, your school, and your neighborhood!

๐Ÿ“š How to Say "There is" and "There are"

When you want to describe what exists in a place (your room, your school, your city), English uses "There is" and "There are". This is different from French! ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

โ˜๏ธ

SINGULAR (1 thing)

There is + ONE thing

"There is a TV in my room."

"There is a park near my house."

โœŒ๏ธ

PLURAL (2+ things)

There are + MANY things

"There are two windows in my room."

"There are many shops in my town."

๐ŸŽฏ The Pattern

There is + a/an + singular noun

There is a bed. There is an apple.

There are + number/some/many + plural noun

There are three books. There are some chairs.

โŒ Negative Form

There isn't = There is not (singular)

"There isn't a balcony in my room."

There aren't = There are not (plural)

"There aren't any parks near my school."

๐Ÿ’ก French Comparison

In French, you use "Il y a" for both singular AND plural.
In English, you MUST choose: "There is" (1) or "There are" (2+)

Il y a un lit = There is a bed

Il y a des livres = There are books
