Warm-up 🔁

Before the new story, let's bring back your words from the lessons before. The ones ready to review are waiting here — a little today, a little in a few days.

The Saturday market 📖

Read it slowly. Say the words out loud.

It is Saturday morning. Rosa needs fruit for the café. "Come, Mia! Today we go to the market." 🧺

Mia and Rosa walk through a bright open-air market with colourful fruit and vegetable stalls. Mia points curiously at a pile of apples.

The market is big and full of colour. Apples, oranges, bananas! Mia loves it.

"Look at this apple!" says Mia. "It's so red! And look at that big orange over there!"

Rosa smiles. "We need apples for the café. Today you buy them, Mia." Mia? Alone? Oh!

Mia goes to the apple stall. The man smiles. "Hello!" says Mia. "How much is it?" She points at a big red apple.

"One pound for four," says the man. "Oh, that is cheap!" says Mia. The big oranges are three pounds. A little expensive!

Mia takes her money and counts the coins. One… two… "Here you are!"

Mia hands coins to a friendly stallholder while holding a paper bag of fruit, in warm morning light.

The man gives her a bag of apples. "Thank you!" Rosa claps her hands. "Your first buy, Mia — in English!" Mia is so happy. 🍎

Notice: this apple is near Mia — that orange is over there. And How much is it? asks the price — you know it from Rosa's café! Learn the new words next.

The pattern: this / that 🧩

Near me → this. Over there → that. Then ask the price: How much is it?

This apple is near me. 🍏 👈
That orange is over there. 👉  …  🍊
this = near  ·  that = far
How much is this? → It's one pound.
How much is that? → It's three pounds.
One pound? That's cheap!  ·  Three pounds? That's expensive!
Try it now: point at something near you and say "this". Point at something far and say "that". Then ask: "How much is this? How much is that?"

Act it out 🎭

Now YOU are in the story!

🎬 The scene: Saturday morning at the market. Rosa needs apples for the café — and today YOU buy them. A man smiles at his fruit stall.

Round 1 — you are Mia

Your teacher is the market man. Speak your lines — don't write them.

Man: "Hello! Lovely apples today!"

You: (point near you 🍎👈 — ask the price)

Man: "One pound for four."

You: (little money! 🪙 say what you think — then point far away 🍊👉 and ask about that one)

Man: "Three pounds each."

You: (a LOT of money! 💎 say what you think — then ask for four apples, politely)

Man: "Here you are!"

You: (give your money and say a polite word)

Round 2 — swap!

Now YOU are the market man, and your teacher is Mia. But this time you sell bananas and oranges — and your prices are different.
