Warm-up 🔁

Before the new story, let's bring back your words from the lessons before. The ones ready to review are waiting here — a little today, a little in a few days.

The wonky cake 📖

Read it slowly. Say the words out loud.

In the café kitchen, Rosa shows Mia how to mix a big bowl of cake batter — flour dust in the air, both laughing.

It is a quiet afternoon at the café. Rosa makes a cake. Mmm, it smells wonderful! 🍰

"Can you bake, Mia?" asks Rosa. Mia laughs. "No, I can't! But I can eat cake!"

Rosa smiles. "Come here. Today you learn. First, one egg. Then the sugar. Now mix, mix, mix!"

Mia mixes. Flour flies everywhere — on her nose, on Rosa's hands! They laugh and laugh.

The cake goes in the oven. Mia waits. And waits. "Is it ready now?" "Not yet!" says Rosa.

Mia proudly holds a slightly wonky but lovely cake; Rosa claps her hands.

At last, the cake is ready. It is not… pretty. One side is big, one side is small. But it smells like a dream.

Tom comes in and tries a piece. "Mmm! It looks funny — but it is wonderful!"

Rosa claps her hands. "You see, Mia? You can bake! You can!" Mia smiles a big smile. 🎂

Notice: at the start, Mia says "I can't bake." At the end, Rosa says "You can bake!" One little word — can — says what is possible. Learn today's words next.

The pattern: can / can't 🧩

One little word says what is possible: can. To say no, use can't.

I can bake.  ·  I can't bake.
She can cook.  ·  He can't swim.
Can you bake? → Yes, I can. / No, I can't.
Can she sing? → Yes, she can. / No, she can't.
Two easy rules: can never changes — I can, you can, she can (not "she cans"). And after can, the verb is small and simple: I can bake (not "I can to bake").

Act it out 🎭

Now YOU are in the story!

🎬 The scene: A quiet afternoon in the café kitchen. Rosa has a big bowl, flour, and a warm oven. Today you make something sweet.

Round 1 — you are Mia

Your teacher is Rosa. Speak your lines — don't write them.

Rosa: "Can you bake, Mia?"

You: (say no — but say one thing you CAN do 😋🎂)

Rosa: "Come — today you learn!"

You: (say yes — say you want to try)

Rosa: "Good! What do we need?"

You: (say two things 🥚 🍬)

Rosa: "Mix, mix… look! Ready!"

You: (the cake is here — say what you can do now! 💪)

Round 2 — swap!

Now YOU are Rosa, and your teacher is Mia. But this time you two make bread, not cake — and Mia asks the questions.
