Is there any milk? 📖

Read it slowly. Say the words out loud.

Mia peers into an almost-empty fridge — one egg, one lonely tomato — with comic dismay.

It is Mia's first morning in the flat. She is hungry. 🍳

She opens the fridge. Oh no! There is one egg. There is one sad tomato.

"There isn't any milk!" says Mia. "There isn't any bread!"

There is some butter, but there isn't any cheese. The fridge is nearly empty.

Mia writes a shopping list at her kitchen table, pencil on her chin.

Mia sits down. She takes a pencil and some paper. She writes a shopping list. 📝

Some milk, some bread, some fruit, some rice… the list gets long!

"Today I go shopping," she says. "I need everything!" 🛒

Notice: we use some and any for food. some in + sentences, any in − and ? sentences.

Act it out 🎭

Now YOU are in the kitchen — and the fridge is nearly empty!

🎬 The scene: It is morning in the new flat. Tom comes for breakfast, but there is almost no food.

Round 1 — you are Mia

Your teacher is Tom. Speak your lines — don't write them.

Tom: "Good morning! I'm so hungry. Can we make eggs and toast?"

You: (open the fridge and say which two foods there aren't)

Tom: "Oh no! What have we got, then?"

You: (say which two foods there ARE in the fridge)

Tom: "That's not much. OK, let's go to the shop. What do we need?"

You: (read your shopping list to him — three things you need)

Round 2 — swap!

Now YOU are Tom, and your teacher is Mia. But this time you are at Tom's flat, and different food is missing from his fridge.
