The Impossible Challenge
Can you memorize 5 diplomatic disagreement expressions in 30 seconds?
Recall — FRAME (Lesson 1)
Numbat — "That's a nuanced question..." Bat — "On balance, I'd say..." Cow — "It's conceivable that..." Frogmouth — "Let me frame this another way..." Camel — "I'd want to caveat that by saying..."
Recall — POSITION (Lesson 2)
Polar Bear — "My position is..." Elephant — "The evidence suggests..." Praying Mantis — "What this means in practice is..." Tapir — "I take your point, however..." Stingray — "To strengthen that argument..."
Your Mission

You can FRAME a response and POSITION an argument. Now you need to NAVIGATE — handle pushback, redirect, and disagree without burning bridges.

5 new expressions. 30 seconds. Then they vanish.

The Creatures
Five creatures for five ways to handle disagreement with grace.
The NAVIGATE Toolkit

Disagreement is where most speakers fall apart. These 5 expressions let you acknowledge, redirect, push back, provoke, and close — all without damaging the relationship.

Seahorse → Otter → Puffin → Platypus → Agaric Fungi

The 5 NAVIGATE Creatures
*
SE = Seahorse
Key word: "See" → "I see where you're coming from, but..." — A Seahorse that faces you, nods gently, then drifts in the opposite direction
*
ON = (use AN) Angel
Key word: "Another" → "That's one way to look at it. Another perspective might be..." — An Angel showing you a second viewpoint from above
*
PU = Puffin
Key word: "Push" → "I'd push back slightly on that..." — A small Puffin standing firm against the wind, not aggressive but unmoved
*
PL = Platypus
Key word: "Playing" → "Playing devil's advocate for a moment..." — A Platypus — the strangest creature — deliberately taking the strangest position
*
AG = Agaric Fungi
Key word: "Agree" → "We may need to agree to disagree on..." — An Agaric mushroom and a tree, growing side by side but in completely different directions
Build Your Scenes
Five creatures, five expressions. Make each scene unforgettable.
Scene-building tip: Disagreement is emotional. Use that. The Puffin isn't just standing — it's standing on a cliff edge in a storm, feathers blowing sideways, but it will NOT move. That image stays.
Your NAVIGATE Chain
Five tools for handling any disagreement professionally.
The Diplomacy Escalation

These five escalate gently: acknowledge → offer alternative → push back → provoke → close. You choose the right level for the situation.

When to Use Each One
Seahorse — "I see where you're coming from, but..." The softest disagreement. You validate the other person first. Use when you want to maintain rapport while changing direction. Essential in client meetings and team discussions.
Angel — "That's one way to look at it. Another perspective might be..." Introduces an alternative without attacking the original. Use when you want to broaden the conversation rather than shut someone down. Especially powerful in group discussions.
Puffin — "I'd push back slightly on that..." Firm but measured. You're signalling disagreement openly but without hostility. "Slightly" does the heavy lifting — it softens the blow while making your position clear.
Platypus — "Playing devil's advocate for a moment..." Lets you argue a position you might not hold. Perfect for testing ideas, stress-testing assumptions, or raising an uncomfortable point that needs raising. The disclaimer protects you.
Agaric Fungi — "We may need to agree to disagree on..." The professional exit. Not every disagreement needs resolution. This phrase closes the loop respectfully so everyone can move on. Essential for preserving working relationships.
Lock It In

Close your eyes. Walk through the five creatures. Seahorse nods and turns. Angel shows a second view. Puffin stands firm. Platypus takes the strange position. Agaric grows its own way.
