Course Architecture

This course transforms the Dewey Decimal Classification system into a living memory palace. The goal: when you meet anyone — a physicist, a lawyer, a musician, a historian — you can navigate to the relevant section of your mental architecture and retrieve 10 genuinely interesting ideas to discuss with them.

The Dewey Decimal System divides all human knowledge into 10 classes, each containing 10 divisions. That gives us 99 active divisions (040 is unassigned), each holding 10 curated conversation items — a total of 990 pieces of knowledge, organised spatially in your memory.

The Palace Architecture

Your memory palace is structured as 10 buildings (one per DDC class), each containing 10 rooms (one per division). Each room holds 10 anchor points where conversation items are placed.

The default layout imagines the 10 buildings along a street — but the most powerful approach is to use 10 real buildings you already know well. Your childhood home, your school, your workplace, your gym, your favourite restaurant, a friend's house — any building whose layout you can walk through in your mind's eye. Assign one DDC class to each building. The more personal the building, the stronger your spatial memory will anchor the knowledge inside it.

The room themes suggested below are starting points. If a room in your real building naturally suggests a different theme, use that instead — your own associations will always be more vivid than someone else's.
