You start with $500. Your job is to find the grammar errors hidden in 10 sentences. When you spot an error, you bid $100 on that sentence.
Correct bid: You found an error → You get $200 back ($100 profit)
Wrong bid: The sentence was actually correct → You lose $100
Missed error: You didn't bid, but there was an error → No penalty, no profit
Perfect score = $1,000
Warm-Up: Test Your Instinct
Before you start the auction, try these three sentences. Do they have errors?
1. "Despite feeling unwell, she delivered an excellent presentation."
No error. This is correct. "Despite" is followed by a noun phrase. The sentence uses correct word order and grammar.
2. "She suggested me to take a different approach."
ERROR. "Suggest" cannot be used with an object pronoun + infinitive. The correct form is: "She suggested that I take a different approach." Or: "She suggested taking a different approach."
3. "I've been meaning to call you — I just haven't had the chance."
No error. This is correct. Present perfect continuous ("I've been meaning") combines with simple present perfect ("I haven't had") naturally.
