B2 Focus Diagnostic — Mixed Conditionals

Welcome to The Time Scrambler. Standard conditionals live in one time zone — but real regret and real consequence often cross time zones. That's where mixed conditionals come in.

There are two patterns to master:

Pattern A: Past → Present
If + past perfect, would + base verb
"If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now."
(past action → present result)
Pattern B: Present → Past
If + past simple, would have + past participle
"If she were more careful, she wouldn't have crashed the car."
(ongoing trait → past outcome)

Use Pattern A when a past choice still affects now. Use Pattern B when a present trait or state explains something that already happened. For each item below, pick the completion that matches the time logic.

Ten items. Read each scenario carefully — the time signals tell you which pattern fits.

Here is every item with the right answer and the rule behind it. Mixed conditionals are mostly about reading the time signals correctly — the patterns themselves are fixed.
