What is an Advantages/Disadvantages Essay?

You are asked to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of a situation. Unlike a discussion essay, you do not need to give your personal opinion (though some questions ask for it — read carefully).

Today's Question

The widespread use of social media has transformed how people communicate and access information.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Watch out — this question type has two variants:

"Discuss the advantages and disadvantages." — Cover both sides objectively. No opinion required (or give a balanced verdict).
"Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" — This is today's type. You MUST decide which side is stronger and argue for it.

Essay Structure

Introduction

Introduce the development + state whether advantages or disadvantages outweigh

40-50 words
Body 1: Advantages

Two specific advantages with explanation

90-110 words
Body 2: Disadvantages

Two specific disadvantages with explanation

90-110 words
Conclusion

Restate your verdict — which side outweighs the other and why

35-45 words
Today's question asks "outweigh?": One of your body paragraphs should feel slightly stronger/longer than the other. Your conclusion must state clearly which side wins.

Review: What Do You Already Know?

From memory — what are the real advantages and disadvantages of social media?

Today's goal: You will be able to write a complete advantages/disadvantages essay that discusses both sides clearly and reaches a justified verdict on which outweighs the other.

Model Essay: Band 8

Notice the verdict is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Body 2 (disadvantages) is written fairly even though the overall verdict favours advantages.

INTROThe proliferation of social media platforms has fundamentally altered patterns of human communication and information sharing. While this development carries certain risks, I believe the advantages ultimately outweigh the disadvantages, given the extraordinary gains in connectivity and access to knowledge.
ADVANTAGESThe most significant advantage of social media is its capacity to connect individuals across geographical boundaries, enabling the formation of communities based on shared interests rather than proximity. This has proven particularly valuable for isolated populations — including those with rare medical conditions or minority cultural identities — who can now access peer support networks that were previously unimaginable. Furthermore, social media platforms have democratised access to information, allowing citizens to bypass traditional media gatekeepers and access diverse perspectives.
DISADVANTAGESNevertheless, the potential for social media to facilitate the spread of misinformation represents a serious concern. Research indicates that false information spreads significantly faster on social platforms than factual reporting, with potentially dangerous real-world consequences. Additionally, the addictive design of these platforms — engineered to maximise engagement through dopamine-triggering notifications — has been linked to increased rates of anxiety and depression, particularly among adolescents.
CONCLUSIONIn conclusion, although social media presents genuine risks relating to misinformation and mental health, the unprecedented opportunities for connection and knowledge-sharing it provides lead me to conclude that the advantages are more significant overall.

Introduction verdict: "I believe the advantages ultimately outweigh..." — stated upfront

Advantage language: "The most significant advantage of X is its capacity to..." "Furthermore, X has democratised..."

Disadvantage contrast: "Nevertheless, the potential for X to... represents a serious concern."

Evidence: "Research indicates that false information spreads significantly faster..." — specific, not vague

Conclusion verdict: "the advantages are more significant overall" — mirrors intro, doesn't copy it
