What is an Advantages/Disadvantages Essay?

You are asked to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of a situation. Unlike a discussion essay, you do not need to give your personal opinion (though some questions ask for it — read carefully).

Today's Question

Nowadays, many young people's choice of a career or job tends to be influenced mainly by how much money they will earn.

Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

(Based on a question from IELTS Academic, March 2025)

Watch out — this question type has two variants:

"Discuss the advantages and disadvantages." — Cover both sides objectively. No opinion required (or give a balanced verdict).
"Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" — This is today's type. You MUST decide which side is stronger and argue for it.
Critical: This asks "Do the advantages OUTWEIGH the disadvantages?" — you MUST give a verdict in your introduction and conclusion. Don't sit on the fence. Make a clear choice: advantages OR disadvantages outweigh.

Brainstorm: Young People and Career Choice

What are the real advantages and disadvantages when young people choose careers based mainly on salary?

Compare with Practice 1: In Practice 1, we discussed whether social media's advantages outweigh its disadvantages. Today we're examining career choice and salary — a completely different context, but the same essay structure and verdict approach.
Today's goal: You will be able to write a complete advantages/disadvantages essay on career choice that takes a clear stand on which side weighs more heavily.

Model Essay: Band 8

Notice the verdict is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. In this essay, the disadvantages are argued to outweigh the advantages.

INTROWhile financial security is undeniably important for young people entering the workforce, the trend of prioritising salary above all other factors in career selection poses significant risks. Although this approach offers certain short-term benefits, the disadvantages ultimately outweigh the advantages, as exclusive focus on earning potential neglects crucial elements of long-term fulfilment and professional development.
ADVANTAGESOne undeniable advantage of salary-driven career choice is the financial security it provides. For many young people facing rising costs of living, securing a well-paid position enables them to achieve independence, manage debt repayment, and support their families. From a practical standpoint, higher income can unlock opportunities for further education, healthcare, and investment in future goals. This is particularly relevant given the current economic climate, where financial stability has become increasingly elusive for younger generations.
DISADVANTAGESThe most significant drawback, however, is the risk of job dissatisfaction and burnout. Research consistently demonstrates that intrinsic job satisfaction — derived from meaningful work, growth opportunities, and alignment with personal values — correlates far more strongly with long-term wellbeing than salary alone. Young people who pursue high-paying roles misaligned with their talents and interests frequently experience mental health challenges, declining productivity, and eventual career stagnation. Additionally, prioritising earnings over passion neglects the development of genuine expertise and professional identity. A career driven purely by salary lacks the engagement necessary for sustained motivation, innovation, and advancement into genuinely senior roles.
CONCLUSIONIn summary, while financial stability is a legitimate concern for young people, allowing salary to dominate career decisions leads to widespread unhappiness and underutilised talent. The long-term psychological, professional, and societal consequences of job dissatisfaction far outweigh the short-term security of a higher paycheck.

Introduction verdict: "the disadvantages ultimately outweigh the advantages" — stated upfront, unambiguous

Advantage acknowledgement: "One undeniable advantage of salary-driven career choice is..." — concedes the valid point

Disadvantage emphasis: "The most significant drawback, however, is..." — signals shift to stronger argument

Weighing language: "correlates far more strongly", "consequences of X far outweigh Y" — uses comparative, weighted vocabulary

Conclusion restatement: "far outweigh the short-term security" — reinforces the winning side with different vocabulary
