What is a Discussion Essay?

You are given two opposing views and asked to discuss both, then give your own opinion. You must show balance — covering both sides — before revealing which you prefer.

Today's Question

Some people believe that working from home has more advantages than disadvantages. Others argue that the traditional office environment is superior.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Key difference from Opinion Essay: You MUST cover both sides. Your opinion comes at the end of the essay, not in the first line. Body 1 = one view. Body 2 = the other view. Conclusion = your verdict.

Essay Structure

Introduction

Acknowledge both views exist + state you will discuss both + hint at your position

40-50 words
Body 1: View A (working from home)

Present this view fairly — the best arguments FOR it

90-110 words
Body 2: View B (office environment)

Present this view fairly — the best arguments FOR it

90-110 words
Conclusion

State your own opinion clearly + brief justification

40-50 words

Review: What Do You Already Know?

From memory — what are the strongest arguments on each side?

Working from Home
Office Environment
Today's goal: You will be able to write a balanced discussion essay that presents both sides fairly before giving a clear personal verdict in the conclusion.

Model Essay: Band 8

Notice: the introduction doesn't state an opinion. Both bodies present views fairly. Only the conclusion gives the writer's position.

INTROThe debate surrounding remote working versus the traditional office has intensified considerably in recent years. While proponents of home-based working cite flexibility and productivity gains, advocates of office environments highlight collaboration and career development. This essay will examine both perspectives before reaching a conclusion.
BODY 1Those who favour working from home argue that the elimination of commuting frees up significant time and reduces stress, enabling employees to achieve a healthier work-life balance. Furthermore, research consistently indicates that remote workers often demonstrate higher levels of productivity, as the absence of office distractions allows for deeper concentration. It is widely acknowledged that flexible working arrangements also benefit employers through reduced overhead costs.
BODY 2On the other hand, proponents of the traditional office contend that face-to-face interaction remains irreplaceable for fostering creativity and innovation. Spontaneous conversations and impromptu brainstorming sessions — hallmarks of office culture — are difficult to replicate digitally. Moreover, it could be argued that younger employees in particular benefit from direct mentorship and social learning that only physical proximity can provide.
CONCLUSIONHaving considered both viewpoints, I believe that a hybrid model represents the most pragmatic solution. While remote work clearly offers individual benefits, the collaborative advantages of the office remain too significant to abandon entirely.

Intro pattern: "While proponents of X cite..., advocates of Y highlight..." — acknowledges both immediately

Body 1 signal: "Those who favour X argue that..." — presents a view, not your view

Body 2 signal: "On the other hand, proponents of Y contend that..." — clear contrast

Distancing phrases: "It is widely acknowledged that...", "It could be argued that..." — shows these are others' views, not necessarily yours

Conclusion: "Having considered both viewpoints, I believe..." — opinion only appears here
