It is sometimes argued that teenagers should be required to carry out unpaid work in their community as a condition of finishing secondary school. I strongly agree with this proposal, as the benefits for both students and society are considerable.

The most important advantage is the effect on the students themselves. Adolescents who spend time helping charities, cleaning local areas or coaching younger children develop practical skills and a sense of responsibility that classrooms rarely provide. Someone who has organised a food drive, for instance, learns teamwork, communication and time management far more vividly than through any textbook. This experience also strengthens university and job applications, giving young people a genuine advantage in later life.

A second benefit is the impact on the wider community. Schools contain thousands of energetic young people whose efforts, if directed usefully, could ease real social problems, from loneliness among the elderly to neglected public spaces. Compulsory service also fosters empathy, encouraging teenagers to understand lives very different from their own and reducing social division in the long term.

Opponents claim that forcing people to volunteer is contradictory and that unwilling students will contribute little. While this concern is understandable, most teenagers who are initially reluctant come to value the experience once they see its results, and light supervision easily ensures the work is meaningful.

In conclusion, although the idea of compulsory volunteering seems paradoxical, I firmly believe that requiring community service in schools would benefit young people and society alike, and it should be widely adopted.
