What is a Two-Part Question Essay?

The question contains two separate questions that you must both answer fully. Each question gets its own body paragraph. Missing one question entirely will significantly reduce your Task Achievement score.

Today's Question

International travel has become more accessible than ever before.

Why do people choose to travel abroad? What impact does international tourism have on local communities?
The most common mistake: Students write a lot about one question and barely touch the other. Both questions must be answered with roughly equal depth. Underline BOTH questions before you start planning.

Review: Separate the Two Questions

Question 1: Why travel abroad?
Question 2: Impact on local communities?
Today's goal: You will be able to write a two-part essay that answers both questions fully and with equal depth, using appropriate topic sentences that signal which question you are answering.

Model Essay: Band 8

Notice: each body paragraph clearly signals which question it is answering. The two questions receive equal treatment.

INTROThe increasing affordability of international travel has made it possible for unprecedented numbers of people to explore the world beyond their borders. This essay will examine the motivations driving this trend and consider the effects that large-scale tourism has on the communities that host it.
Q1: WHYPeople travel abroad for a variety of compelling reasons, the most fundamental of which is the desire to encounter cultures, landscapes, and experiences that differ radically from their own. Exposure to different ways of life can profoundly challenge assumptions and broaden perspectives in ways that no book or documentary can replicate. Beyond personal enrichment, international travel also serves professional purposes, with many individuals using trips abroad to establish business connections, attend conferences, or develop language proficiency in authentic contexts.
Q2: IMPACTThe impact of international tourism on host communities is complex and multifaceted. On the positive side, tourism generates significant economic activity — supporting local businesses, creating employment, and funding the preservation of cultural heritage sites. However, the negative consequences are equally significant: mass tourism frequently drives up property prices, displacing long-term residents, while the environmental strain of high visitor volumes can irreversibly damage the natural and cultural assets that originally attracted tourists.
CONCLUSIONIn conclusion, people travel internationally primarily in pursuit of cultural enrichment and professional development, while the communities that receive them experience both economic benefits and considerable social and environmental pressures.

Introduction signal: "This essay will examine the motivations... and consider the effects..." — tells the reader what's coming

Q1 topic sentence: "People travel abroad for a variety of compelling reasons..." — directly answers the question

Q2 topic sentence: "The impact of international tourism on host communities is complex and multifaceted." — directly answers the second question

Balance: Both body paragraphs are roughly equal in length (around 90-100 words each)

Conclusion: Summarises BOTH answers — "people travel... while communities experience..." — using a parallel structure
