Understanding the Two Past Tenses 🎯
Why Two Different Past Tenses?
English uses two past tenses to show the difference between actions:
📍 Past Simple
Complete actions
✓ Finished
✓ Has a clear end
✓ The main event
I called you.
(finished action)
🌊 Past Continuous
Actions in progress
✓ Was happening
✓ Background scene
✓ Unfinished at that moment
I was sleeping.
(in progress)
When We Use Them Together:
I was sleeping when you called me.
🌊 Background: I was sleeping (in progress, setting the scene)
⚡ Interruption: when you called me (sudden event that happened)
Warm-Up Discussion
Answer these questions together:
- What were you doing at 8 PM yesterday? (Set the scene...)
- What were you doing when I called you to schedule this lesson?
- Have you ever been in the middle of something when someone interrupted you? Tell me about it!
🎯 Today's Goal
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to tell detailed stories that paint a picture of what was happening, not just what happened. This makes your English sound much more natural and fluent!
Setting the Scene 🖼️
Past Continuous = The Background of Your Story
Use Past Continuous to describe what was happening - like a camera showing the scene BEFORE the action starts.
Click Each Scene to Discuss:
🌧️
Scene 1: A Rainy Evening
It was raining heavily. The wind was blowing. People were running for shelter.
🗣️ Discuss:
- Describe a rainy day you remember. What was happening around you?
- What were you doing the last time there was a big storm?
- What sounds could you hear? What were people doing?
🎉
Scene 2: A Birthday Party
Everyone was dancing. Music was playing loudly. Some people were eating cake.
🗣️ Discuss:
- Think of a party you went to. Set the scene - what was happening when you arrived?
- What were different people doing?
- What was the atmosphere like?
🏫
Scene 3: A Boring Class
The teacher was talking about grammar. Most students were looking at their phones. One boy was sleeping.

- What were the other students doing?
- What was the teacher doing that made it boring?
🚗
Scene 4: Traffic Jam
Cars were honking. Nothing was moving. The sun was beating down. Everyone was getting frustrated.

Interrupted Actions ⚡
The Classic Pattern:
I was doing X (in progress) when Y happened (interruption)
Real-Life Examples:
- I was watching Netflix when the power went out.
- We were having dinner when someone knocked on the door.
- I was walking home when I saw my ex-girlfriend.
- She was texting her friend when she fell down the stairs.
Common Interruption Situations:
Tell Me About a Time When...
1
Your phone rang at a bad moment
What were you doing when it rang? Who was calling? What happened?
2
Someone interrupted you during an important moment
What were you doing? Who interrupted? How did you feel?
3
Something broke or stopped working while you were using it
What were you doing when it broke? What did you do next?
4
You realized something important while doing something else
What were you doing when you realized? What was your reaction?
Build the Story Together:
🎮 The Awkward Moment
Imagine: You were doing something embarrassing when someone important saw you...
Build this story step by step:
- Step 1: What embarrassing thing were you doing? (singing badly, talking to yourself, dancing alone, etc.)
- Step 2: Where were you? Set the scene.
- Step 3: Who saw you? (teacher, crush, boss, parent's friend)
- Step 4: What was their reaction?
- Step 5: What did you do or say?
📱 The Phone Call
Build a story about receiving an unexpected phone call...
Answer these questions:
- What were you doing when your phone rang?
- Who was calling? Were you expecting it?
- What news did they tell you? (good or bad)
- How did you react?
- What did you do after the call?
Role-Play Scenarios 🎭
How Role-Plays Work:
You and your teacher will each play a character. Practice telling stories using Past Continuous + Past Simple in realistic conversations.
🚔 Scenario 1: The Police Interview
There was a theft at a shop yesterday at 3 PM. The police want to know where everyone was.
👮 Police Officer
🧑 Witness/Suspect
Police asks:
- "Where were you yesterday at 3 PM?"
- "What were you doing?"
- "Who were you with?"
- "What did you do after that?"
- "Did you see anything unusual?"
Witness answers with details - use Past Continuous and Past Simple!
💔 Scenario 2: The Break-Up Story
Student A is telling their friend (Student B) about a dramatic break-up that just happened.
😢 Friend 1 (telling story)
😮 Friend 2 (asking questions)
Friend 1 explains:
- "We were having a nice dinner when..."
- "I was feeling really happy but then..."
- "They were acting strange all evening..."
Friend 2 asks:
- "What were you talking about?"
- "What were they doing when they told you?"
- "How did you react?"
🎬 Scenario 3: The Movie Theater Disaster
Two friends went to see a movie, but everything went wrong! One friend is telling another friend what happened.
🎬 Storyteller
😂 Listener
Ideas for disasters:
- Someone was kicking the back of your seat
- Your friend was eating loudly during a quiet scene
- Someone's phone rang during the best part
- A couple was arguing/kissing next to you
- You spilled your drink
Describe what was happening when each disaster occurred!
📞 Scenario 4: The Excuse
You were supposed to meet your friend 2 hours ago, but you forgot! Call them and explain what happened.
😰 Late Person
😤 Angry Friend
Late person explains:
- "I'm so sorry! I was [doing something] when..."
- "I was just about to leave when..."
- "I was getting ready when something happened..."
Angry friend asks:
- "Where were you? I was waiting for ages!"
- "What were you doing all this time?"
- "Why didn't you call me?"
The Alibi Game 🔍
What's an Alibi?
An alibi is proof that you were somewhere else when a crime happened. In this game, you'll need to prove where you were!
🕵️ The Crime:
Someone stole all the chocolate from the school vending machine yesterday between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM!
How to Play:
- Student creates their alibi - Where were you? What were you doing? Who was with you?
- Teacher asks detailed questions - Trying to catch inconsistencies!
- Student must remember all details - No contradictions allowed!
Example Questions Teacher Will Ask:
Time & Place:
- Where exactly were you at 4:15 PM?
- What room? What building? Inside or outside?
- How long were you there?
Actions:
- What were you doing when it was stolen?
- What were you wearing?
- What were the people around you doing?
Details:
- Who were you with? What were they doing?
- What were you talking about?
- Did you see anyone suspicious?
- What happened before 4 PM? What did you do after 5 PM?
Trick Questions:
- So you were studying... but earlier you said you were playing video games?
- You said you were alone, but who was Tom then?
- The library closes at 4 PM on Tuesdays...
Alternative Crime Scenarios:
💻
The Hacked Computer
Someone hacked the school computer and changed everyone's grades yesterday at 3 PM.
🎨
The Graffiti
Someone spray-painted "School is boring" on the gym wall last night at 8 PM.
🏃
The Fire Alarm
Someone pulled the fire alarm during an important exam at 10:30 AM this morning.
🍕
The Missing Pizza
Someone ate your teacher's lunch (a whole pizza) from the staff room at lunchtime.
🎯 Game Strategy
For Students: Create a detailed, consistent story. The more details you remember, the better!
For Teacher: Start with easy questions, then try to find contradictions. Make it fun - this is about practicing, not catching them out for real!
