Review and Next Steps

5 minutes

Well Done!

You've learned the 3 key strategies for IELTS Speaking Part 1. These three moves are the foundation of a good Part 1 answer at every level.

The 3 Strategies - Summary

1
EXTEND
Never give just 1 sentence. Add when, where, who, what.
2
REASON
Use "because" or "so" to explain why.
3
EXAMPLE
Use "for example" or "like" to be specific.

Realistic Goals

Your Target

Every Part 1 answer should be 2–4 natural sentences: an answer, then a reason or an example. Keep practising until it happens without thinking.

Focus on:

  • Using these 3 strategies every time
  • Speaking clearly (pronunciation)
  • Staying calm and natural

Going further: what Band 7 sounds like

"Do you like cooking?" — "I do, actually — more than I expected to. I only started cooking properly when I moved out, mostly out of necessity, but now it's the part of the evening I look forward to. I'm still hopeless at baking, though."

Notice: it is not longer than a Band 5 answer. What lifts it is natural spoken English (actually, mostly out of necessity), more than one tense (started, look forward to) and a small twist at the end (hopeless at baking, though).
