Rule 1: The Double Letter Trap ▼

Some words have double letters that students often forget. Look for patterns:

accommodation (double C, double M)
accomodation

necessary (one C, double S)
neccessary

recommend (one C, double M)
reccommend

Memory Trick: "1 Collar, 2 Sleeves" for neCeSSary (1 C, 2 S's)

Rule 2: Silent Letters Matter ▼

These letters are silent but MUST be written:

government (silent N)
goverment

environment (silent N)
enviroment

Wednesday (silent D)
Wenesday

Memory Trick: Say "govern-MENT" and "environ-MENT" out loud to remember the N

Rule 3: I Before E (Except...) ▼

The classic rule: "I before E, except after C"

believe, achieve, receive
beleive, acheive, recieve

After C: receive, deceive, ceiling
recieve, decieve

Exceptions to memorize: weird, their, foreign, height, neither, either

Rule 4: The -TION vs -SION Trap ▼

Both sound like "shun" but are spelled differently:

-TION (most common): education, situation, information

-SION (after certain letters): conclusion, decision, discussion

-SSION: permission, admission, profession

Pattern: After D, use -SION (decide → decision). After T, use -TION (educate → education)

Rule 5: The Killer Words (Just Memorize These!) ▼

These words don't follow clear rules - you just have to know them:

definitely NOT definately

separate NOT seperate

occurrence NOT occurence

immediately NOT immediatly

beginning NOT begining

Memory Tricks:

- "There's definitely a FINITE in definITEly"

- "There's A RAT in sepARAte"
