📅 Lesson 8: Future Arrangements

Present Continuous for Fixed Plans and Schedules

🌟 Warm-Up: What's on Your Schedule?

Let's talk about your plans and arrangements! Think about things you have scheduled with specific times.

💭 What are you doing this weekend?
Think about specific plans with times: "I'm meeting friends at 3 PM on Saturday..."
💭 Do you have any appointments this week?
Doctor, dentist, meetings, classes... "I'm seeing the dentist on Thursday..."
💭 What are you doing tonight/tomorrow?
Even simple plans count! "I'm having dinner with my family..."

🎯 Quick Check: Busy or Free?

Tell your teacher if you're busy or free at these times:

🌅 Tomorrow morning
Busy or free?
🌆 This evening
Busy or free?
📅 Saturday afternoon
Busy or free?
🌙 Sunday evening
Busy or free?

🗣️ Let's Compare!

Discuss with your teacher:

  • Who has a busier schedule?
  • Do you prefer to plan ahead or be spontaneous?
  • What's the most exciting thing on your calendar?

🔍 Grammar Discovery: Present Continuous for Future

📱 Story Time: Sarah's Week

It's Monday morning. Sarah is talking to her friend:

"I'm really busy this week! Tonight, I'm having dinner with Tom at 7 PM. Tomorrow, I'm meeting my study group at the library. On Wednesday, I'm going to the dentist at 2:30. And this weekend? I'm flying to London to visit my sister! Oh, and we are celebrating Mom's birthday on Saturday evening."

❓ Notice something interesting?

  • Is Sarah talking about NOW or the FUTURE?
  • Are these plans or spontaneous decisions?
  • Does she have specific times/days?

📊 The Rule:

USE PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR FUTURE when:

  • ✅ You have a fixed arrangement (confirmed plan)
  • ✅ There's a specific time or date
  • ✅ You've organized it with someone else
  • ✅ It's in your calendar/schedule

🔄 Compare the Three Future Forms:

Form Use Example
WILL Spontaneous decision / Prediction "I'll help you!" (just decided)
"It will rain." (prediction)
GOING TO Plans / Intentions (no specific time) "I'm going to study medicine."
(my plan, but when? not fixed yet)
PRESENT CONTINUOUS Fixed arrangements (specific time) "I'm meeting John at 3 PM tomorrow."
(confirmed, specific time, organized)

🔢 How to Form:

PRESENT CONTINUOUS (for future):

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing + time expression

  • I am meeting her tomorrow.
  • She is visiting us on Monday.
  • They are flying to Paris tonight.

⚠️ Important: You need a future time word (tomorrow, tonight, next week, etc.)

💬 Common Verbs for Arrangements:

meeting
seeing
visiting
having (dinner/party)
going (to...)
flying/traveling
starting
leaving

💡 Guided Practice: Choose the Best Form!
