Imaginary Present Situations

"If I had a million dollars, I would buy a house."
✓ Imaginary! I DON'T have a million dollars. (Past simple + would)
"If she were here, she would help us."
✓ Imaginary! She ISN'T here. Note: Use "were" for all persons with "if" (not "was").
"If I spoke Chinese, I would get that job."
✓ Imaginary! I DON'T speak Chinese.

Advice & Suggestions

"If I were you, I would study harder."
✓ Common way to give advice. "If I were you" = imagining being the other person.
"If I were you, I wouldn't do that."
✓ Negative advice. "wouldn't" = would not

Impossible/Unlikely Situations

"If I were a bird, I would fly everywhere."
✓ Completely impossible! I can never be a bird.
"If aliens came to Earth, what would you do?"
✓ Very unlikely situation - fun to imagine!

⚠️ Special Note: "Was" vs "Were"

In second conditional, use "WERE" for all persons!

If I were rich... (not "was")

If he were here... (not "was")

If she were the boss... (not "was")

Note: In casual speech, some people say "If I was" but "If I were" is more correct for second conditional.
