🔗 Defining Relative Clauses

Describing People, Places & Things

B1 Level | Lesson 22 | 50 minutes

🔥 Which One? Be Specific!

❓ Imagine you're at a party with 50 people. Your friend asks "Who's your teacher?" Would you say "The woman" or "The woman who's wearing a red dress"?

❌ Too Vague!

"I want the book."

Which book? There are thousands!

✅ Perfect!

"I want the book that you recommended."

Now I know exactly which one!

🎯
Relative clauses help us be SPECIFIC - essential for describing the exact person, place, or thing we mean!

🗣️ Real-Life Examples

Vague: "Call the guy."

Specific: "Call the guy who fixed our computer."

Vague: "Let's go to the restaurant."

Specific: "Let's go to the restaurant where we had our first date."

🎮 The Guessing Game Problem

Imagine playing "20 Questions." If you just say "I'm thinking of a person," your friend can't guess. But if you say "I'm thinking of a person who wrote Harry Potter," they'll get it immediately!

That's the power of relative clauses - they give ESSENTIAL information to identify exactly what you're talking about.

🤔 Discuss: Think about your best friend. How would you describe them to someone who's never met them?

📚 Four Magic Words

🔑 The Four Relative Pronouns

These words connect extra information to the noun:

Word Use For Example
WHO People The teacher who taught me English lives in London.
WHICH Things/Animals The car which I bought last year broke down.
THAT People OR Things The movie that we watched was amazing.
The man that I met was very kind.
WHERE Places This is the café where I work.

💡 Important: "That" is Universal!

"That" can replace "who" OR "which" in most cases:

  • The woman who/that lives next door (both work!)
  • The book which/that I'm reading (both work!)

However, you CANNOT replace "where" with "that":

❌ "The place that I was born" → ✅ "The place where I was born"

🏗️ How to Build Relative Clauses

Step 1: Start with the main noun
"I have a friend..."
Step 2: Add the relative pronoun (who/which/that/where)
"I have a friend who..."
Step 3: Add the extra information
"I have a friend who speaks 5 languages."

Two Sentences (Boring!)

I met a woman. She works at Google.

One Smooth Sentence! ✨

I met a woman who works at Google.

🗣️ Quick Practice: Combine these: "I live in a city. It has beautiful beaches." → "I live in a city that..."

🗣️ 5 Essential Patterns

👆 Click each card to reveal details and practice!

1. "The person who..." - Describing People
Formality: Neutral (all situations)
Use "who" to give essential information about a person. Also works: "the man who," "the woman who," "someone who," "people who."
🔹 "I have a friend who can speak 7 languages."
🔹 "The teacher who taught me math retired last year."
🔹 "People who exercise regularly live longer."
NOW YOU TRY: Describe someone you know using "I know someone who..." (Think about their job, hobby, or special skill!)
2. "The thing that..." - Describing Objects/Ideas
Formality: Neutral
Use "that" or "which" for things, objects, or abstract ideas. "That" is more common in speaking.
🔹 "The movie that we watched last night was scary."
🔹 "This is the phone which I've been saving for."
🔹 "I love food that is spicy."
NOW YOU TRY: What's something you own that's special to you? "I have a [thing] that..."
3. "The place where..." - Describing Locations
Formality: Neutral
Use "where" for places and locations. Works with: restaurant, city, country, house, café, school, etc.
🔹 "This is the restaurant where I met my partner."
🔹 "I want to visit the city where I was born."
🔹 "The café where I study is very quiet."
NOW YOU TRY: Think of a meaningful place in your life. "I remember the place where..."
4. "Everything that..." - Generalizations
Formality: Neutral
Use with "everything," "anything," "nothing," "something" to talk about general things. Always use "that" (never "which") after these words!
🔹 "I believe everything that my grandmother says."
🔹 "Is there anything that I can do to help?"
🔹 "Nothing that you say will change my mind!"
NOW YOU TRY: Complete: "Something that makes me happy is..."
5. "The day/time when..." - Time References
Formality: Neutral
Use "when" for time references, though in modern English we often omit it. Works with: day, time, moment, year, etc.
🔹 "I'll never forget the day when I graduated."
🔹 "That was the moment when everything changed."
🔹 "Do you remember the time when we got lost in Paris?" (or: "...the time we got lost...")
NOW YOU TRY: Think of an important moment: "I remember the day when..."
