🎯 Lesson 33: Cleft Sentences

What I..., It was... who - Emphasizing Exactly What You Want!

🎯 What are Cleft Sentences?

Cleft sentences split (or "cleave") a sentence into two parts to emphasize specific information. The word you want to emphasize goes in a special position.

Think of it as a spotlight - you can shine it on EXACTLY the part of the sentence you want people to notice!

😐 Normal (No emphasis)

"I love the flexibility of English."

Nothing is emphasized

🎯 CLEFT (Emphasis on "flexibility"!)

"What I love about English is the flexibility!"

Now "flexibility" is emphasized!

😐 Normal

"I saw Mary yesterday."

🎯 CLEFT

"It was Mary (that) I saw yesterday!"

Emphasizes WHO you saw

😐 Normal

"I saw Mary yesterday."

🎯 CLEFT

"It was yesterday (that) I saw Mary!"

Emphasizes WHEN you saw her
