💼 What is the Subjunctive?

The subjunctive is a special verb form used in formal English to express recommendations, requirements, suggestions, and importance. It's VERY common in business, academic, and professional contexts!

The key: we use the BASE FORM of the verb (no -s, no -ed) after certain expressions!

"I think he should be more careful."

Pattern: Verb + that + subject + BASE FORM (no -s!)

Pattern: It's + adjective + that + subject + BASE FORM

It's ESSENTIAL that + base form
"It's essential that she arrive on time."
NOT: "It's essential that she arrives on time." ❌
It's IMPORTANT that + base form
"It's important that everyone understand the rules."

3. NEGATIVE SUBJUNCTIVE NOT + BASE

Pattern: ... that + subject + NOT + base form

Negative recommendations:
"I suggest that he not attend the meeting."
"It's important that she not be late."
"We recommend that the policy not be changed."

4. PASSIVE SUBJUNCTIVE BE + PAST PARTICIPLE

Pattern: ... that + subject + BE + past participle

Passive constructions:
"I suggest that the meeting be postponed."
