A2 β€’ Lesson 7 of 75

Comparing Things

Say WHY you prefer one thing over another

🎨 Description & Explanation
πŸ“– Do Prep First β†’

Let's See What You Know

Before anything new β€” let's see what comes to mind already...

🧠 Look at these two pictures. What words can you think of to describe them?

πŸ–οΈ
Beach Holiday
VS
πŸ”οΈ
Mountain Holiday

Say any words you can β€” hot, cold, fun, boring... Don't worry about mistakes!

πŸ€” Now try: Can you say which one is better? Try to explain WHY.

Just try. Any language is fine. We'll learn better ways to do this today.

Today we're working on: comparing two things so you can explain your preferences clearly and naturally.

Why does this matter?

❌ Without comparison language: "Beach is good. Mountains... no."

βœ… With comparison language: "I prefer the beach because it's cheaper than a mountain holiday, and the weather is better."

The second answer uses comparative adjectives β€” and that's exactly what we'll learn today. First, the adjectives. Then, the structures.

The Adjectives You Need

Before you can compare things, you need the right adjectives (describing words) AND you need to know how to change them into comparative form.

πŸ“ Rule 1: Short adjectives (1 syllable)

Add -er

cheap β†’ cheaper
fast β†’ faster
old β†’ older

πŸ“ Rule 2: Short adjectives ending in -y

Change -y to -ier

easy β†’ easier
busy β†’ busier
healthy β†’ healthier

πŸ“ Rule 3: Long adjectives (2+ syllables)

Put more before the adjective

more expensive
more relaxing
more interesting

⚠️ Rule 4: Irregular β€” you must memorise these!

good β†’ better
bad β†’ worse
far β†’ further

3 Comparison Structures

Now you know the adjectives β€” here are 3 ways to use them in sentences.

Structure 1: [A] is [comparative] than [B]

[thing 1] + is + [comparative adjective] + than + [thing 2]
πŸ“ Model sentences

The beach is cheaper than the mountains.

Trains are faster than buses.

Coffee is more popular than tea in my country.

Home cooking is better than restaurant food.

🎀 NOW YOU TRY β€” Use the sentence builder:

πŸš— Cars are er / more than 🚌 buses.

πŸ’¬ Choose an adjective:

faster more expensive more relaxing smaller

Example answer: "Cars are faster than buses."

Structure 2: [A] is not as [adjective] as [B]

[thing 1] + is not as + [adjective β€” normal form!] + as + [thing 2]

⚠️ Important: Use the NORMAL adjective here β€” NOT the comparative! "not as cheap as" β€” not "not as cheaper as"

πŸ“ Model sentences

Buses are not as fast as cars. (= buses are slower)

My phone isn't as expensive as yours. (= mine is cheaper)

Tea isn't as strong as coffee. (= tea is weaker)

πŸ’‘ Why use this? It sounds softer and more polite. Instead of saying "Your cooking is worse than my mum's" β†’ "Your cooking isn't as good as my mum's"

🎀 NOW YOU TRY β€” Use the sentence builder:

πŸ“Ί Netflix is not as (adjective) as 🎬 the cinema.

πŸ’¬ Choose an adjective (NORMAL form, not comparative!):

exciting expensive big social

Example answer: "Netflix is not as exciting as the cinema."

Structure 3: [A] is similar to / different from [B]

[A] + is similar to + [B]
[A] + is (very/completely) different from + [B]
πŸ“ Model sentences

Spanish is similar to Italian.

City life is very different from country life.

Working from home is similar to being at the office β€” you still have meetings!

🎀 NOW YOU TRY:

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ My country is similar to / different from ___(another country)___

Example: "My country is very different from Japan."

🧠 Quick Rule Check β€” Cover the rules above!

Structure 1 formula: [A] is ___ than [B]. What goes in the blank?
comparative adjective (cheaper / more expensive / better)
Structure 2: "not as ___ as" β€” do you use the comparative or the normal adjective?
Normal adjective! "not as cheap as" βœ… NOT "not as cheaper as" ❌
Structure 3: Is it "different from" or "different than"?
different from βœ… (In British English. "Different than" is used in American English but "from" is always safe.)

Guided Practice

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« I DO β€” Watch how I think

Topic: πŸ• Pizza vs πŸ” Burgers

πŸ“ Model answer (3 structures)

OK so... pizza and burgers. I think pizza is cheaper than a good burger β€” you can get a big pizza for very little money. But a burger isn't as easy to share as a pizza, because everyone wants different toppings. In general, I'd say pizza is similar to burgers β€” they're both fast food that everyone loves.

☝️ Notice: I used all 3 structures: cheaper than, not as easy as, similar to

πŸ‘₯ WE DO β€” Let's build this together

Topic: πŸ“± Texting vs πŸ“ž Calling

Let's build 3 sentences together. I'll give you the structure β€” you choose the adjective from the word bank.

πŸ’¬ Adjectives you can use:

faster easier more personal expensive good

Sentence 1 β€” Use "...er than" or "more...than":

Texting is comparative than calling.
πŸ‘† Try first, then click to see possible answers

"Texting is faster than calling."

"Texting is easier than calling."

Sentence 2 β€” Use "not as...as":

Texting is not as adjective as calling.
πŸ‘† Try first, then click to see possible answers

"Texting is not as personal as calling."

"Texting is not as expensive as calling."

Sentence 3 β€” Use "similar to" or "different from":

Texting is similar to / different from calling because...
πŸ‘† Try first, then click to see a possible answer

"Texting is very different from calling because you can think before you answer."

🎀 YOU DO β€” Your turn alone!

Topic: β˜• Coffee vs 🍡 Tea

Now make 3 sentences yourself. Use all 3 structures. The word bank is here to help.

πŸ’¬ Adjectives you can use:

stronger cheaper healthier more popular more relaxing good bitter sweet
1. Coffee is comparative than tea.
2. Tea is not as adjective as coffee.
3. Coffee is similar to / different from tea because...
βœ… Click to see example answers (only AFTER you've tried!)

1. "Coffee is stronger than tea."

2. "Tea is not as bitter as coffee."

3. "Coffee is similar to tea because they're both hot drinks."

Mixed Practice

Now the challenge: I give you the topic and the adjective β€” you choose the RIGHT structure and make a sentence. Say it out loud!

πŸ“‹ Your 3 structures (choose the right one each time):

[A] is er / more than [B] [A] is not as as [B] [A] is similar to / different from [B]
1. 🏠 Cooking at home vs 🍽️ Eating at a restaurant β€” Adjective: cheap
Which structure works best here?

βœ… "Cooking at home is cheaper than eating out."

βœ… OR "Eating out is not as cheap as cooking at home."

Both work! Same meaning, different structure.

2. πŸ“š Physical books vs πŸ“± E-books β€” Adjective: heavy
Think: which one is heavier?

βœ… "Physical books are heavier than e-books."

βœ… OR "E-books are not as heavy as physical books."

3. πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French vs πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Spanish β€” Think about similarity/difference
Are they the same kind of thing?

βœ… "French is similar to Spanish β€” they both come from Latin."

βœ… OR "French is different from Spanish in pronunciation."

4. πŸŒ… Mornings vs πŸŒ™ Evenings β€” Adjective: relaxing
Is "relaxing" a short or long word?

βœ… "Evenings are more relaxing than mornings."

βœ… OR "Mornings are not as relaxing as evenings."

Remember: long word = more + adjective

5. 🎬 Cinema vs πŸ“Ί Netflix β€” Adjective: good
Careful β€” "good" is irregular!

βœ… "The cinema is better than Netflix for new movies."

βœ… OR "Netflix is not as good as the cinema for the big-screen feeling."

⚠️ NOT "gooder than"! good β†’ better

6. πŸŽ“ Learning at school vs πŸ’» Learning online β€” Adjective: easy
What happens to the -y?

βœ… "Learning online is easier than going to school β€” you can study in bed!"

βœ… OR "School is not as easy as online learning."

easy β†’ easier (y changes to ier)

🎀 Elaboration: Explain the Rule!

In your own words, explain to your teacher:

When do you add -er? When do you use "more"? What are the 2 irregular ones?

Free Speaking: Compare These!

Now use everything you've learned. For each topic, compare the two things using at least 2 structures. The word bank is always here to help.

🧠 Final Retrieval β€” From Memory!

Cover everything. Can you answer these?

1. What are the 4 rules for making comparative adjectives?
Think: short words, -y words, long words, and...?

Use any structure you like

Any correct sentence works! Check: Did you use a comparative adjective correctly?

e.g. "Summer is hotter than winter" βœ… / "Summer is not as cold as winter" βœ…

πŸ“‹ "I Can..." Statement
