Quick Decision!

You have 3 seconds. Which would you choose?

🏖️
Beach Holiday
VS
🏔️
Mountain Adventure

How Did You Express That?

Many learners say: "I like beach." or "Beach is better."

Native speakers say things like:

"I'd rather go to the beach."

"I'd prefer a beach holiday."

"I'd go for the beach, personally."

"Given the choice, I'd pick the mountains."

Today's Goal: Learn 5 natural ways to express preferences, so you sound more fluent when discussing choices and hypothetical situations.

5 Ways to Express Preferences

Click each card to see the full pattern and examples:

1. "I'd rather..." (Informal favorite)

"I'd rather stay home tonight."
I'd rather + base verb (no "to"!)

✓ "I'd rather have coffee." (correct)

✗ "I'd rather to have coffee." (wrong!)

✓ "I'd rather not go out." (negative)

For comparing: "I'd rather watch Netflix than go to the cinema."

2. "I'd prefer..." (Slightly more formal)

"I'd prefer something quieter."
I'd prefer + noun / to + verb

✓ "I'd prefer tea." (+ noun)

✓ "I'd prefer to stay home." (+ to + verb)

✓ "I'd prefer not to discuss it." (negative)

For comparing: "I'd prefer tea to coffee." / "I'd prefer to walk rather than drive."

3. "I'd go for..." (Casual/spoken)

"I'd go for the pasta, I think."
I'd go for + noun

✓ "I'd go for the blue one."

✓ "I'd probably go for option B."

✓ "I'd definitely go for the cheaper option."

Great for: choosing from menus, options, products

4. "Given the choice,..." (Hypothetical)

"Given the choice, I'd live by the sea."
Given the choice, + I'd + base verb

✓ "Given the choice, I'd work from home."

✓ "Given the choice, I'd travel more."

Also: "If I had to choose,..." or "If it were up to me,..."

5. "I'm more of a ... person." (Identity-based)

"I'm more of a tea person."
I'm (more of) a + noun + person

✓ "I'm a morning person." (describes your nature)

✓ "I'm more of a dog person." (cats vs dogs)

✓ "I'm not really a party person." (negative)

Great for: explaining preferences that reflect your personality

Quick Grammar Note

"I'd" = "I would" - Used for hypothetical preferences

Don't confuse with general preferences:

• "I prefer tea." (general fact - always true)

• "I'd prefer tea." (right now / in this situation)

Guided Practice

Express your preference using the structure indicated. Say your answer aloud!

Coffee ☕ or Tea 🍵?

Use "I'd rather..." OR "I'm more of a ... person"

Example: "I'd rather have tea" or "I'm more of a coffee person"

At a restaurant, the waiter asks: "Would you like fish or chicken?"

Use "I'd go for..."

Example: "I'd go for the fish, please."

City life 🏙️ or Countryside life 🌳?

Use "Given the choice,..." and explain why

Example: "Given the choice, I'd live in the countryside because it's more peaceful."

Work from home 🏠 or Work in an office 🏢?

Use "I'd prefer..." + a reason

Example: "I'd prefer to work from home because I'm more productive there."

Early mornings 🌅 or Late nights 🌙?

Use "I'm more of a ... person" + explain

Example: "I'm more of a night owl. I do my best work late at night."

Combine Structures

Your friend says: "Do you want to go hiking or have a beach day this weekend?"

Give a full answer using 2 different preference structures + a reason

Example: "I'd rather go to the beach, I think. I'm more of a relaxation person than an adventure person. Plus, the weather's supposed to be perfect for swimming!"
