The Mastery Test

You'll complete 3 speaking challenges that test all your A2 skills together. There's no "pass" or "fail" - this is about seeing how far you've come!

Skills You'll Use:

  • Interaction: Active listening, follow-up questions, agreeing/disagreeing
  • Discourse: Story structure, cause/effect, narratives
  • Opinion: Opinions, reasons, preferences

Imagine you're in a job interview or meeting someone new. Answer the question: "Tell me about yourself - who are you, what do you do, and what are your plans for the future?"

Skills to use: Time-buying (L1), Opinions (L3), Preferences (L14), Describing experiences (L13), Cause & effect (L11), Fillers (L16)

Checklist - Did you include:

  • ☐ At least one time-buying phrase to start
  • ☐ Description of your current situation
  • ☐ A reason or explanation (because, that's why)
  • ☐ Your preferences or opinions about something
  • ☐ Natural fillers when needed (um, well, you know)
  • ☐ At least one self-correction if you made a mistake

Skills to use: Story structure (L4, L17), Vivid descriptions (L13), Cause & effect (L11), Opinion formula (L3), Reasons (L8), Comparisons - before vs after (L7)

Checklist - Did you include:

  • ☐ Clear BEGINNING: Set the scene (when, where, who)
  • ☐ Clear MIDDLE: What happened (with sequencing)
  • ☐ Clear END: How it affected you
  • ☐ Your OLD opinion vs your NEW opinion (comparison)
  • ☐ Reasons WHY it changed your view
  • ☐ At least 2 vivid adjectives (not just "good" or "nice")

The Big Question

"What would you change about education if you could? Explain what the current problem is, what you would do differently, and why you think it would be better."

Skills to use: ALL OF THEM! This tests your complete A2 speaking ability.

Checklist - Did you include:

  • ☐ Time-buying to start ("That's a good question... Let me think...")
  • ☐ Your opinion clearly stated
  • ☐ Description of the current situation/problem
  • ☐ Your proposed change (explaining the process)
  • ☐ Reasons and examples
  • ☐ Cause and effect connections
  • ☐ Comparisons (current vs your idea)
  • ☐ Acknowledgment of other views ("Some people might say...")
  • ☐ A clear conclusion ("That's why I think...")
  • ☐ Natural fillers throughout

Remember: It's okay to pause and think. Use your fillers! The goal is to keep speaking for 5 full minutes.
