Three New A2 Structures

These three patterns come up all the time at A2 level. Open each card, read the formula and examples, then try to remember — you'll need all three in the Gauntlet.

Structure A — Comparatives

›

Use comparatives to say that one thing is different from another. The form depends on the length of the adjective.

Short adjective (1 syllable): adjective + -er + than
Long adjective (2+ syllables): more + adjective + than
Not as… as: not as + adjective + as
✗ Wrong
My flat is more big than yours.
✓ Correct
My flat is bigger than yours.
✗ Wrong
This lesson is interestinger than the last one.
✓ Correct
This lesson is more interesting than the last one.
✗ Wrong
The train is not so fast as the plane.
✓ Correct
The train is not as fast as the plane.
Irregular: good → better, bad → worse, far → further. Never say "more better" or "more worse".

Structure B — Too / Enough

›

Too = more than needed (negative). Enough = the right amount. The word order is the key thing to get right.

too + adjective (+ to + verb)
adjective/adverb + enough (+ to + verb)
enough + noun
✗ Wrong
The coffee is enough hot to drink.
✓ Correct
The coffee is too hot to drink.
✗ Wrong
She isn't enough old to vote.
✓ Correct
She isn't old enough to vote.
✗ Wrong
We don't have money enough for the trip.
✓ Correct
We don't have enough money for the trip.
Enough comes AFTER adjectives/adverbs but BEFORE nouns. This is a very common word-order error.

Structure C — Question Tags

›

A question tag is a short question added to the end of a statement. Positive statement → negative tag. Negative statement → positive tag.

Positive statement + negative tag: It's cold, isn't it?
Negative statement + positive tag: You haven't met her, have you?
Use the same auxiliary verb as the main sentence.
✗ Wrong
It's a nice day, isn't?
✓ Correct
It's a nice day, isn't it?
✗ Wrong
She can swim, can she?
✓ Correct
She can swim, can't she?
✗ Wrong
You like coffee, don't you? (said to someone who never drinks coffee)
✓ Correct
You don't like coffee, do you?
With "I am" the tag is "aren't I?" — not "amn't I?" (except in some dialects). E.g. "I'm next, aren't I?"
