Every Story Has a Shape

In Lesson 4, you learned basic sequencing (First, Then, Suddenly...). Now let's build COMPLETE stories with proper beginnings, middles, and endings.

The Problem

Unstructured: "So I went to Paris. It was nice. I saw the Eiffel Tower. The food was good. Then I came home."

😴 No shape, no drama, no memorable ending

The Solution

Structured: "So, a few years ago I went to Paris for the first time. I remember walking down the street and suddenly seeing the Eiffel Tower appear. I literally stopped and just stared. That moment made me realize why people love that city so much."

✓ Clear beginning, memorable middle, meaningful ending

Today's Goal: Learn the 3-part narrative structure with specific phrases for each section, so your stories have impact.

The 3-Part Narrative Structure

📍 BEGINNING
Set the scene
When/Where/Who
⚡ MIDDLE
The events
Problem/Turning point
🎯 END
Resolution
Lesson/Feeling

Phrases for Each Part

📍 BEGINNING: Setting the Scene

"So, this happened a few years ago when I was..." / "It was [time] and I was [doing]..."

Purpose: Give context - when, where, who

Starter phrases:

  • "So, this happened back in [year]..."
  • "I remember it was [season/time] and I was..."
  • "A few years ago, when I was living in..."
  • "This is a story about the time I..."

⚡ MIDDLE: Building Tension

"And then suddenly..." / "The problem was..." / "That's when..."

Purpose: Create interest with events, problems, or turning points

Key phrases:

  • "Everything was going fine until..."
  • "And then, out of nowhere,..."
  • "The thing is,..."
  • "What I didn't know was..."
  • "That's when I realized..."

🎯 END: Closing Strong

"In the end,..." / "Looking back,..." / "That's why I always..."

Purpose: Give resolution, reflection, or lesson learned

Closing phrases:

  • "In the end, it all worked out because..."
  • "Looking back, I learned that..."
  • "And that's why I now always..."
  • "That experience taught me..."
  • "I'll never forget that because..."

Example Full Narrative

BEGINNING

"So, this happened about five years ago when I was still a student. I was traveling alone in Spain for the first time."

MIDDLE

"Everything was going fine until I got to this small town and realized I'd left my wallet on the train. I had no money, no phone, nothing. That's when this local family saw me looking completely lost..."

END

"In the end, they invited me to stay with them for the night and even bought me a bus ticket the next day. Looking back, that experience taught me that people are generally kind, and I'll never forget their generosity."

Guided Practice

Build stories using the 3-part structure. Say each part aloud!

📖 Story: A time you were really nervous

BEGINNING: Start with "I remember it was..." + set the scene

Example: "I remember it was the morning of my driving test. I was sitting in the car, hands shaking..."

Continue the same story...

MIDDLE: Add "Everything was going fine until..." OR "That's when..."

Example: "Everything was going fine until the examiner told me to do a parallel park on a really busy street..."

Finish the story...

END: Close with "In the end,..." + lesson or feeling

Example: "In the end, I actually passed! Looking back, I learned that I can do things even when I'm terrified."

Quick Story Challenge

📖 Tell a complete story about: "A lucky moment"

Use ALL THREE parts in 1 minute!

Beginning (scene) → Middle (the lucky event) → End (why it mattered)

Free Production: Life Stories

Tell complete stories using the 3-part structure. Aim for 2-3 minutes each!

Story Timer

3:00

🎯 Story 1: An Embarrassing Moment

Tell a story about something embarrassing that happened to you. Make sure listeners know how it ends!

Structure: Set scene → What happened → How you felt/what you learned

🎯 Story 2: A Big Decision

Tell a story about a time you had to make a difficult choice. What happened because of that decision?

Use cause-effect phrases from L11: "Because of this...", "As a result..."

🎯 Story 3: Meeting Someone Important

Tell a story about meeting someone who became important in your life (friend, partner, mentor).

Include how it started AND how it affected your life

🎯 Story 4: A Travel Adventure

Tell a story about something unexpected that happened while traveling.

Use vivid adjectives from L13 to describe the experience!

Checklist: Does your story have a clear beginning, a turning point/problem in the middle, and a meaningful ending?

Recall Zone

Combine narrative skills with previous lessons:

📍 From Lesson 4: Telling Stories

What's the 5-part story sequence?

So,... → First,... → Then/After that,... → Suddenly,... → In the end,...

💡 This fits inside the MIDDLE section of today's 3-part structure!

📍 From Lesson 13: Describing Experiences

Name 3 powerful adjectives for describing feelings:

Terrified, relieved, overwhelmed, thrilled, devastated...

💡 Use these in your endings: "I was absolutely relieved when..."

📍 From Lesson 16: Fillers

What filler is perfect for starting stories?

"So,..."

💡 "So, this happened about..." is the perfect story opener!

Self-Check

📋 Today's "I Can" Statement

"I can tell a complete story with a clear beginning (setting the scene), middle (events/problem), and end (resolution/lesson)."

How confident do you feel?

1

5

1 = Not yet confident → 5 = Very confident
