🎯 Discourse & StructureImagine someone asks you: "What do you think about social media?"
Compare these two answers:
❌ Rambling
"Well, social media is... I mean, I use Instagram and sometimes Twitter, well X now, and I think it's good for keeping in touch with people but also sometimes it's bad because people spend too much time on it and there's fake news and cyberbullying and stuff but also it's useful for business..."
😵 Hard to follow!
✓ Structured
"Overall, I think social media has both positive and negative sides. On one hand, it helps people stay connected and share ideas. On the other hand, it can be addictive and spread misinformation. So in conclusion, I think it's a tool that needs to be used carefully."
✨ Clear and professional!
The secret? The Three-Part Structure:
Today you'll learn: Signal phrases for each part of the structure.
Each part of the structure has specific phrases that guide your listener:
Key Phrases:
• "Overall, I think..." / "Generally speaking, I believe..."
• "To answer your question directly..."
• "My view is that..." / "The way I see it..."
Open with: "Is it important to learn history?" Start with "Overall, I think..."
For TWO sides:
• "On one hand... On the other hand..."
• "There are positives, like... However, there are also negatives, such as..."
For ADDING points:
• "What's more..." / "In addition..." / "Another point is..."
For EXAMPLES:
• "For example..." / "For instance..." / "To give you an example..."
Develop your answer about history using "On one hand... On the other hand..."
Key Phrases:
• "So in conclusion..." / "To sum up..."
• "All things considered..." / "Taking everything into account..."
• "So that's why I think..." / "That's my view, anyway."
Close your answer about history with "So in conclusion..." or "All things considered..."
Let's build a complete three-part response step by step:
Step 1: Your Opening (State your position)
💡 Start with: "Overall, I think..." or "The way I see it..." - Give your main opinion in 1-2 sentences.
Step 2: Development A - The positive side
💡 Start with: "On one hand..." - Give 1-2 reasons or examples why this is a good idea.
Step 3: Development B - The other side or extra point
💡 Start with: "On the other hand..." or "What's more..." - Balance your argument or add depth.
Step 4: Your Closing (Wrap it up!)
💡 Start with: "So in conclusion..." or "All things considered..." - End with a clear final thought.
Say your complete answer (all 4 parts) without stopping. Aim for 45-60 seconds.
Give a 1-minute structured response to each topic. Use the three-part structure!
Goal: Each response should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. No rambling!
Click to test your memory from the previous B1 lessons!
"That's something I've thought about before..."
Also: "There are several ways to look at this..." or "If I had to summarize my view..."
"might" or "could"
Example: "Electric cars might become more common, but it could take time."
First → Then → After that → Finally
Or: Beginning → Middle → End
Answer this question using:
"Do you think artificial intelligence will have more positive or negative effects on society?"
Try: "That's something I've thought about before... Overall, I think AI will probably... On one hand... On the other hand... So in conclusion..."
I can organize longer responses using a three-part structure
How confident do you feel?
1 = Need more practice | 5 = I've got this!
Opening: "Overall..." / "The way I see it..." / "Generally speaking..."
Development: "On one hand... On the other hand..." / "For example..." / "What's more..."
Closing: "So in conclusion..." / "All things considered..." / "That's my view."
Next time someone asks your opinion on something, mentally count: 1-2-3. Opening, Development, Closing. Even in casual conversation!
